GAME RECAP - The MLC Knights sailed past the Marantha Crusaders 37-6 on a cool day in New Ulm, Minnesota. Saturday was parents day and MLC's Knights played to impress the large crowd on hand for the event. The Knights outgained the Crusaders in yardage 476-155.
Returning for the Knights was QB Seth Fitzsimmons who hadn't played since the first game of the year. He and Ben Kuerth combined for 231 yards passing and 4 touchdowns. Kuerth threw as 79 yard pass to Casey Holtz in the first half and a 14-yard scoring strike to Mike Feuerstahler late in the second quarter. Fitzsimmons hit Tim Breitkreutz and Feuerstahler for touchdowns also.
The running game was also working for the Kngihts. Junior Paul Mattek ran for 84 yards on 13 carries and senior tailback Bill Heiges pounded out 70 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Heiges' touchdown came after Kuerth threw a lateral to Chris Rathje, who then found a streaking Noah Bater down the middle of the field for a 67 yard gain down to the 2 yard line.
On the Knights' next drive, Kuerth found a wide open Casey Holtz who extended the lead to 14-0. MLC then ran its lead to 21-0 when Fitzsimmons connected with Breitkreutz on a 13 yard touchdown. Then with less then 2:00 remaining in the half, Kuerth drove the Knights 40 yards in 7 plays, capping the drive off with a 14-yard touchdown strike to Feuerstahler.
Maranatha scored scored on a 61-yard screen pass from Nathan Duffie to Josh Angelmeyer, but Marantha never threatened after that. Gorsline said of the game, "We jumped on them right away, and I think maybe that hurt the. I'm happy with the W. We're .500 and it sure would be nice to win next week because I'd hate to have the first losing season at MLC."
