Knights Kick Off Season Against Maranatha

STAT LEADERS

INDIVIDUAL

Freshness and optimism abound as the Knights begin year three under head coach Doug Lange against the Maranatha Crusaders Saturday.  Coming off a difficult 2-8 2006 campaign, the Knights have been infused with young talent.  Challenged with few bodies on a 40 man roster last year, this year's squad had increased to 62, with 30 new players.  While numbers may be up, Coach Lange now has the task of building cohesion and getting everyone on the right page.

"The obvious challenges to this team are to meld together the returnees with the incoming players," says Coach Doug Lange, "as well as having the new players learn the vast amount of information for the Knights system. So far, good progress has been accomplished."

The Knights get to put that progress to the test against Maranatha this weekend.  Maranatha is hoping to build off a promising 2006 season which included a winning UMAC record (4-3) and 6-3 overall last year.  The Knights will bring new starters at many of the offensive skill positions, most notably at quarterback and running back.  With good competition at camp, the new offensive threats hope to emerge when it counts.  Senior WR Jake Schwartz returns as the Knights premier outside threat.  Schwartz's big play ability gave the Knights 9 catches of 20 yards or more.

Maranatha also will have a new starter under center this year, with first team All-Conference senior Nick Peterson finishing his four year career amassing over 5,000 passing yards, 44 touchdowns while completing over 55% of his passes.

Creating an identity, on both sides of the ball, and how quickly this team can do it, will determine the level of success the Knights can achieve in 2007.

Word From The Coach

Coach Lange talks about the Knights needing to learn to win close games this season:

"The Knights lost 5 of their games last year by a combined total of 25 points and look to overcome those 5 points per game average on the way to a successful 2007 season."
