2001-02 Season Preview
With 11 returning starters the expectations are very high for the 2001 version of the MLC Knights Mens Basketball Team. The Knights will be led this year by two all-conference players, Tom Engelbrecht and Ben Kuerth and Honorable Mention Jay Wendland. Engelbrecht was the fourth leading scorer and the third leading rebounder in the conference last year, while Kuerth was the 8th leading scorer in the conference. Jay Wendland was 2nd in the conference in assists last year with 4.3 and also led the conference with a free throw percentage of 86%. The Knights have been picked to win the conference in a very tight race. While they will sneak up on no one this season, they will be ready to bring their best game to the court.
The Knights have two freshmen, Aaron Schmitz from Wisconsin Lutheran H.S. and Dan Unke from Minnesota Valley Lutheran H.S. on the squad this year and both will be expected to make contributions in their first year on the college level. The senior captains, Ben Kuerth and Tim Breitkreutz will provide the mature leadership on and off the floor that the team will need to win the conference.
The pre-season schedule is very difficult and against quality teams, so the Knights will be tested early and often. The difficult pre-season though, will sharpen the teams will to play its very best basketball. This should be a fun and interesting season.
