Nass Leads Knights to Victory in First Home Game of the Season
Sophomore forward Nate Nass helped the Knights give the crowd exactly what it wanted--a win in the Knights home debut. Nass scored 15 of his career high 23 points in the first half as the Knights cruised to a 70-55 victory over the Waldorf College Warriors. Sophomore Jake Schwartz added 14 points in the first 20 minutes of play on a perfect 4-4 from the floor. The Knights jumped out to a 41-19 half time lead, shooting over 55% in the half. More importantly, the Knights played their style of defense.
"That first half defense was exactly the type of defense we need to play," said Knights men's head basketball coach Jim Unke.
The Knights saw their lead dwindle down to nine points with six minutes remaining in the second half before Nass fueled the Knights run, hitting a couple of jumpers on back-to-back possessions. Capped by junior point guard Jeff Dolan's fast break lay-up, the Knights stretched the lead back to 15, up 62-47 with just over five minutes left in the game.
"Nate (Nass) hit a couple of big shots for us late in the game, " said coach Unke. "Our defense wasn't as good early in the second half because they changed their offense by pulling us out and taking away our help defense. We made an adjustment and our defense held on in the final minutes of play."
Nass and Schwartz combined for 40 points on the night and coach Unke believes the team's depth will be a big key to the team's success this season.
"We've had four different leading scorers in five games and we've had at least three players reach double figures in four of the first five games of the season," said coach Unke. "Having guys capable of stepping up on any given night will be a big benefit to us and hopefully we can carry this over to Saturday."
Knights junior guard Caleb Kurbis also added 12 points and eight rebounds. The Knights play host to University of Dubuque on Saturday. Tip off is at 3:00 pm.
