Phil Kurbis & Co. Propel Knights to Homecoming Victory

The Knights men’s soccer team matched their season-high in total goals, defeating Crown 5-2.  The Knights performed well offensively as a whole, with freshman forward Phil Kurbis leading today’s scoring efforts with two goals.  Kurbis leads the team in goals scored, and was tied for fourth in the UMAC coming into today’s game.

Junior midfielder Joe Greefkes also had a strong offensive day, scoring the Knight’s second goal of the day, forty-one seconds into the second half.  Greefkes also assisted freshman Zac Pudlo’s header late in the second half, the Knights final goal on the day.  Senior Jake Wagner also had a solo goal and an assist.

Oct 1 - Knights Fall to Northwestern

Trevor Perkin's two goals in a five minute span was all that was needed for Northwestern to defeat MLC 2-1 in UMAC play.  The first half was hard-fought to a 0-0 tie but Northwestern out shot MLC 13-2 in the second half.  Jake Wagner kept the game respectable with a late goal for the Knights.  Also, goaltender Ben Pagel had five saves.  MLC falls to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the UMAC and hosts Augsburg on Wednesday.

Sept 27 - Knights Blast Bethany

The MLC men's soccer team scored four goals in an eleven minute span in the second half as they won their UMAC conference opener 5-1.  Zac Pudlo opened the scoring for the Knights halfway through the first half.  With 18 minutes to go, and the game tied, MLC began their run.  Jake Scott broke the tie and Phil Kurbis followed with a goal a minute later.  Kurbis got another goal six minutes later to make it 4-1.  Nick Schmoller closed out the scoring with five minutes to play.  Goalie Justin Vilski had six saves.  The Knights play at Northwestern on Friday.

Sept 21 - Knights Battle Viterbo

Viterbo's Julian Codova scored on a 20-yard shot with less than 15 minutes left, breaking a 1-1 tie as the V-hawks defeated the Knights.  The Knights scored the first goal when Joe Greefkes netted a Caleb Kurbis pass just past 12 minutes into the game.  Jason Fry knotted the game, but MLC was unable to capitalize on several scoring chances in the second half.  MLC outshot Viterbo 22-14.  Justin Vilski had seven saves for the Knights.

Sept 19 - Knights Blank Waldorf

Two freshman each scored two goals as the MLC men blanked Waldorf College 5-0.  Midfielder Pete Walther and forward Philip Kurbis each scored twice, and Chris Treder scored with a minute left in the game to round out the scoring for the Knights.  Goaltender Ben Pagel was credited with the shutout.  "We played a very solid game," Coach Koelpin said. "We got everybody in and everybody that played, played smart soccer.  We hope that we can keep the roll going for a while now."

Sept 15 - Knights Defeat North Central

Freshman Pete Walther had a goal and an assist, leading the MLC men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over North Central University Thursday night.  Jake Scott also scored for the Knights, who led 2-0 within the first 15 min.  Goalkeeper Justin Vilski had eight saves and kept North Central off the board until the final minute of the game.

Sept 1 - Knights Fight Hard, still lose to St. Olaf

The start of the season is always a tough time, and this year was no exception.  The Knights battled it out with St. Olaf in an intense game, still losing in a 2-1 final.  That goal is one to remember.  Joe Greefkes, using his patented flip throw-in, launched the ball to the center, where Nick Schmoller headed the ball to Caleb Kurbis, who slammed the ball into the goal.  The Knights look forward to their game against Dordt this Saturday.
