This early season battle of undefeated UMAC rivals (both teams were 2-0 in conference play entering the weekend) should give each team an early indication of where they stand in the conference and the quality of teams in division play.
St. Scholastica (7-6 overall, 2-0 in UMAC) are winners of three straight and four of their past five(Friday night results against Bethany not included). Led by the superior guard play of junior Jen Kne and senior Jackie Plesha, who combine for 29 ppg, the dynamic duo have helped the Saints blow out teams in its current winning streak by an average of 30 points. Plesha is also a two-time UMAC Player of the Year.
The lady Knights (3-6, 2-0) have turned it on as of late, riding the hot hand of junior guard and new all-time scoring leader Emma Babinec, who was also named UMAC Player of the Week for last week’s performances. In the game against Crown last Saturday, Babinec scored a game-high 28 points, while senior center Sarah Beilke enjoyed a 7-for-7 shooting performance, adding 14 points in the Knights 79-61 victory.
St. Scholastica has had the Knights number as of late, with the Knights on a six-game losing streak against the Saints. Because the Saints abruptly ended the Knights season each of the past two years, eliminating the Knights in post-season play, the lady Knights will be anxious to end the streak. With the inside-out offensive attack of Beilke, senior forward Beth Ebeling and Babinec, who combine for 60% of the Knights total offense, the Knights appear poised to start a new streak of their own with a victory Saturday.
