March 4 - Unke, Free Lead Group of Knights Honored

Caleb Free was named UMAC Player of the Year, while three other MLC players were named to all-conference teams by the UMAC coaches. Head Coach Jim Unke was also named UMAC Coach of the Year. For the MLC press release, click here. For the official UMAC press release, click here.

 

Feb. 27 - Threes and Shooting Woes Doom Knights

The MLC men's basketball team lost 82-64 Friday night to Bethany in the UMAC semi-final, putting an end to successful season. The Knights were unable to contain Viking Jeff Zimmerman, who scored 39 points (27 in the first half) and went 11-17 from beyond the three-point arc. The Knights trailed by just three at the half at 41-38, but struggled to shoot 25.9 percent from the field in the second half. Brian Gephart led the Knights with 17 points, while Caleb Free and Greg Holzhueter finished with 16 and 15 points respectively. Feb. 21 - MLC Falls at CSS 91-81

The MLC men's basketball team missed an opportunity to win the UMAC outright with a 91-81 loss at St. Scholastica Saturday, but still finished as co-champions of the UMAC with an 11-3 league record and will enter the UMAC tournament as the #2 seed. The Knights were unable to withstand a three-point barrage by the Saints, who went 11-20 from beyond the arc. MLC was led by Caleb Free's 24 points and ten rebounds. Greg Holzhueter and Brian Gephart scored 21 and 15 points respectively.

 

Feb. 20 - Knights Roll at Northland

The MLC men's basketball team kept its one game conference lead heading into the final game of the season with a 90-66 win at Northland College Friday night. The Knights shot 52 percent from the field for the game and turned it over just seven times. Caleb Free led the way for the Knights with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Aaron Schultz and Greg Holzhueter added 19 and 17 points respectively.

 

Feb. 17 - Knights Overcome Bad Start in Win over Rams

The MLC men's basketball team overcame an early 18-3 deficit and two starters leaving the game with injuries to cruise to a 98-76 win over North Central Tuesday. The Knights shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the second half and dished out 26 assists for the game after committing 13 turnovers in the first half. Brian Gephart scored a career high 27 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds, while Caleb Free scored 18 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and added six assists.

 

Feb. 17 - Holzhueter Named Player of the Week

Greg Holzhueter was named Player of the Week after averaging 18 points and four assists per game in wins at UM-Morris and Presentation last weekend. Holzhueter shot 62 percent from the field and 80 percent from beyond the three-point line in the two contests.

 

Feb. 14 - MLC Surges Past Saints in Aberdeen

The MLC men's basketball team started Saturday's game at Presentation on a 23-1 run and never looked in a 88-68 win. The Knights shot 67.9 percent from the floor in the first half on the way to a 48-26 lead at the break. For the game, the Knights shot 62.5 percent from the field and 94.7 percent from the free throw line. All five members of the starting line-up scored in double figures for MLC, led by Aaron Schultz and Greg Holzhueter's 16 points apiece.

 

Feb. 7 - Eagles Snap Knights' Seven Game Win Streak

The MLC men's basketball team lost 61-57 Saturday to Northwestern, snapping a seven-game winning streak. Greg Holzhueter led the Knights with 18 points, while Aaron Schultz and Caleb Free joined him in double figures with ten points each. Free also added 16 rebounds on the night. The Eagles were led by Stephen Hanson, who scored a game high 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

 

Feb. 6 - Knights Pass Through Storm for Big Win

The MLC men's basketball team won it's seventh consecutive game by a score of 85-60 over Crown Friday night. The Knights shared the ball all night, dishing out 26 assists on 33 made baskets. Caleb Free led the Knights in both points (19) and assists (six), while Greg Holzhueter added 14 points. Ryan Kolander had 13 points and ten rebounds, while Aaron Schultz broke the single-season record for blocks in with two in the game, giving him 45 for the season.

 

Feb. 3 - Knights Hang on to Beat North Central

The MLC men's basketball team had a tougher time than expected against North Central but still hung on for a 82-76 win over the Rams. Caleb Free led all scorers in the game with 27 points with the help of seven made free throws, giving him the new school record with 123 on the season. Aaron Schultz had 16 points, ten rebounds and four blocks on the night, giving him 43 for the season and tying him for the school record for a single season. Greg Holzhueter scored 16 points and also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out seven assists.

 

Jan. 30 - Knights Stay Hot with Fifth Straight Win

The MLC men's basketball team won its fifth straight game as they outlasted Bethany 72-66 Friday night. The Knights were extremely efficient offensively, shooting 48 percent from the field for the game and committing just eight turnovers. Four MLC starters finished in double figures, led by Brian Gephart and Aaron Schultz, who each scored 16. Caleb Free and Ryan Kolander added 14 and 12 points respectively, while Free also grabbed ten rebounds and dished out six assists.

 

Jan. 24 - Knights Slow Lumberjacks 62-42

The MLC men's basketball team held Northland to just five field goals in the second half and 23.6 percent shooting for the game in a 62-42 win Saturday night. The Knights made their living in the paint, as Caleb Free and Aaron Schultz had 19 and 14 points respectively. Free also had a game high 15 rebounds. Forward Brian Gephart also contributed inside, grabbing ten rebounds to go with his seven points, while Greg Holzhueter dished out eight assists along with his eight points.

 

Jan. 23 - Strong Second Half Pushes Knights to Victory

The MLC men's basketball team scored just two points in the final nine minutes of the first half, but rallied to shoot 58.1 percent from the floor in the second half to beat St. Scholastica 74-66 Friday night. The Knights outscored the Saints 48-38 in the second half, with the help of four starters in double figures. Caleb Free scored a game high 25 points with the help of four three-pointers, while Aaron Schultz scored 17 points and helped the Knights dominate the glass with nine rebounds. Greg Holzhueter and Ryan Kolander scored 11 points apiece.

 

Jan. 20 - Free Named Player of the Week

Forward Caleb Free was named UMAC Player of the Week for his performance in MLC’s 104-90 overtime win at Bethany on Friday, Jan. 16. Free set a career high with 33 points (with the help of a school record 16 made free throws), and added nine rebounds, six assists and six steals. For the game, Free made seven of his 11 attempts from the field and 16 of 18 attempts from the free throw line.

 

Jan. 16 - Knights Beat Vikings in Overtime

The MLC men's basketball team won a thrilling 104-90 game at rival Bethany after outscoring the Vikings 18-4 in the five minute overtime period. The Knights were led by Caleb Free, who scored a career high 33 points on just 11 shots from the floor and went 16-18 from the free throw line. Brian Gephart and Greg Holzhueter each scored 20 points, with Gephart also chipping in game highs with 14 rebounds and seven assists. The Knights shot an impressive 56.4 percent from the floor for the game, and connected on 36 of 46 attempts from the foul line.

 

Jan. 10 - Knights Crush Crown 83-50

The MLC men's basketball team cruised to a 83-50 win at Crown College Saturday. The Knights shot 53.3 percent from the floor for the game and out-rebounded Crown 41-27 for the game, including an 18-8 edge on the offensive glass. Greg Holzhueter led three Knights in double figures with 12 points, while Ryan Kolander and Aaron Schultz added ten points apiece.

 

Jan. 9 - Eagles Top Knights 79-61

Northwestern shot 52.9 percent from the floor in the first half on its way to a 13-point halftime lead they would not relinquish in a 79-61 win over MLC Friday night. The Knights shot well in the first half (48.1 percent) but were unable to keep up with the Eagles, who outscored MLC from the beyond the three-point line by 18 points. Brian Gephart led the Knights with 17 points and a game high 12 rebounds, while Greg Holzhueter added 14 points and dished out five assists.

 

Dec. 16 -Holzhueter Named Player of the Week

Sophomore point guard Greg Holzhueter was named UMAC Player of the Week for his performance last week for the MLC men's basketball team. Holzhueter led the Knights to a 2-1 record, averaging 15.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 55 percent from beyond the three-point line. Holzhueter scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds in the Knights' 86-74 win at Central on Dec. 12, and also scored 20 points in a 82-79 loss to Dubuque on Dec. 13.

 

Dec. 13 - MLC Falls at Dubuque 82-79

The Knights took a 38-34 lead into halftime but were outscored by seven points in the second half in a 82-79 loss at Dubuque Saturday afternoon. MLC shot 50.9 percent from the floor for the game, but allowed Dubuque to shoot 51.9 percent for the game and 57.7 percent in the second half. The Knights put three players in double figures, led by Greg Holzhueter's 20 points. Caleb Free and Aaron Schultz joined him with 17 and 15 points respectively. Free and Schultz also led the team with six rebounds apiece.

 

Dec. 12 - Knights Beat Central 86-74

The MLC men's basketball team improved to 6-4 on the season with a 86-74 win at Central Friday night. The story of the game was the foul line, as the Knights finished the game 28-34, while Central went just 10-20. Caleb Free used the charity stripe to his advantage all night on his way to a career high 27 points, making 13 of his 14 attempts from the line. Aaron Schultz scored 24 points and also grabbed nine rebounds, while Greg Holzhueter added 20 points and did not commit a turnover in 34 minutes from his point guard position.

 

Dec. 8 - Schultz Ties Blocks Record in 80-68 Win

Center Aaron Schultz tied the MLC record for blocked shots in a game with seven in a 80-68 win over Mayville State Tuesday night. Schultz was a force in the paint on both ends for the Knights, as he scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to go along with his seven blocks. Brian Gephart also played a well rounded game, coming one assist shy of a triple double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. Caleb Free provided efficient offense for MLC, scoring 18 points on just six shot attempts.

 

Dec. 6 - Knights Beat Cougars in a Block Party

The MLC men's basketball team blocked 14 shots and executed well offensively in a 75-61 win over UM-Morris Saturday to move to 2-0 in UMAC play. Center Aaron Schultz led the way for the Knights' defense with six blocks, five of which came in the first half. Caleb Free led all scorers in the game with 19 points, while Brian Gephart added ten points, eight rebounds, four blocks, four assists and one rim rattling dunk that brought the MLC crowd into a frenzy. Point guard Greg Holzhueter kept the Knights offense going, scoring 12 points and dishing out a game high six assists.

 

Dec. 5 - Knights Shoot Past Presentation in UMAC Opener

The MLC men’s basketball team shot 45.1 percent from the floor and held Presentation to 36.5 percent shooting in a 60-49 win Friday night to open to conference season. The Knights also outrebounded the Saints 45 to 30 and had two players record double-doubles. Caleb Free led the Knights with 15 points and ten rebounds, while Aaron Schultz added ten points and 13 rebounds. Brian Gephart made three three-pointers on the night and finished with 13 points and nine rebounds for the Knights.

 

Dec. 1 - Offensive Woes Lead to 70-50 Defeat

The MLC men’s basketball team trailed by only four points at halftime but shot 23.3 percent from the field in the second half in a 70-50 loss to St. Olaf Monday night. The Knights were forced to play without point guard Greg Holzhueter on the night and struggled with turnovers, committing 19 of them for the game, and also could not get good looks at the basket once they broke the pressure defense of St. Olaf. Aaron Schultz and Caleb Free led the Knights with 13 points apiece, while Schultz added 13 rebounds. Bobby Fong led St. Olaf with a game high 19 points.

 

Nov. 22 - Beloit Topples MLC 88-79

The MLC men’s basketball team out-shot Beloit from the field, free throw line and the three-point line but lost at the Buccaneers 88-79 Saturday. The Knights were led offensively by Greg Holzhueter, who scored a career high 22 points and added five assists. Caleb Free registered his second double-double of the weekend with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The Knights struggled to hold onto the ball, however, committing 18 turnovers for the game, compared to 11 for Beloit, and also allowed the Buccaneers to go to the charity stripe 35 times in the game, compared to 18 for the Knights.

 

Nov. 21 - Knights Lose 69-65 at Marian

The MLC men’s basketball team lost at Marian University 69-65 Friday night. The Knights were led by Aaron Schultz, who set career highs with 27 points and five blocks, while also grabbing nine rebounds. Caleb Free notched his first double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Greg Holzhueter joined them in double figures with ten points. The Knights out-shot Marian 45.3 percent to 44.4 percent but struggled all game to take care of the ball, committing 20 turnovers in the game.

 

Nov. 19 - Free Named UMAC Player of the Week

Forward Caleb Free was named UMAC Player of the Week for his play in the Knights' first two games of the season. Free averaged 15.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for MLC and also hit the game-winning three-point shot in Sunday's game against UW-Superior, a game in which he scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

 

Nov. 18 - MLC Beats Viterbo 71-62

The MLC men’s basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 71-62 win at Viterbo Tuesday night. The Knights were led by Caleb Free, who scored a game-high 23 points while shooting 10-12 from the free throw line and also making three of six attempts from behind the three-point line. Aaron Schultz and Greg Holzhueter joined Free in double figures with 16 and ten points respectively, while Free, Schultz and Brian Gephart each had eight rebounds.

 

Nov. 16 - Knights Get First Win Against UW-Superior

The MLC men's basketball team came back from a large first half deficit to claim its first win of the season against UW-Superior by a score of 79-73. The Knights put four players in double figures in scoring, led by Caleb Free's 19 points. Greg Holzhueter, Aaron Schultz and Brian Gephart scored 18, 15 and 12 points respectively. Free also led the Knights with nine rebounds, while Gephart added eight rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Jake Unke came off the bench and dished out a team-best six assists.

 

Trailing by three points at halftime, the Knights outscored the Yellow Jackets 47-38 in the second half, helped by making 15 of 19 free throw attempts for the half. For the game, the Knights went 22-27 from the charity stripe and shot 45.6 percent from the floor.

 

Nov. 15 - Knights Fall to Bethel 70-55 in Season Opener

The Knights lost their season opener at home to Bethel Saturday night by a score of 70-55. Caleb Free and Greg Holzhueter led the Knights with 12 points apiece, while Free also led the team with eight rebounds. Brian Gephart and Aaron Schultz joined them in double figures with ten points. The Knights looked rusty offensively, shooting 37.3 percent from the floor for the game and committing 16 turnovers, which led to 23 Bethel points.
