Course Requirements:

  • Fill out and turn in the necessary forms from MLC's Special Services Office:
    • Language pledge
    • Release of Liability
  • Register yourself with Europa-Kolleg. This includes making a deposit with them.
  • Obtain a valid US Passport
  • Prior to arrival in Germany read the text The German Way available from any on-line bookstore.
  • While in Germany abide by the Language Pledge which you signed and which is on file in the Special Services Office.
  • Attend the Europa-Kolleg in Kassel for four weeks
    • Stay with a German host family.
    • Prepare for, attend, and participate in a “Summer Intensive Course”. Unless you are ill, you must attend each session.

  • Keep a daily journal for each day of the immersion program.
  • Submit a record of satisfactory academic work from the Language School to be placed into your permanent MLC academic file by requesting from Europa-Kolleg the grades of your written tests.
  • All written work needs to be typed with double-spacing and a one-inch margin. (All work needs to be on my desk by the end of the first week of the following school year.
  • Please note: Upon arrival, the language school will test your language ability and place you into the appropriate courses. All levels of instruction are guaranteed, regardless of the number of registrants. Europa-Kolleg will not group students of different abilities together just to fill classes. Nor will classes be canceled because of insufficient registration. Europa-Kolleg guarantees at least four levels of instruction at all times. Classes are normally about 15 students each.
  • Miscellaneous
    • Europa-Kolleg is located in Kassel, a city in the middle of Germany where people speak standard high German. Kassel is not a romantic but obscure village whose few native inhabitants speak an incomprehensible dialect. Kassel is large enough for students to engage in a variety of activities, meet many different people, and have a good time, but it is small enough for participants to feel safe and comfortable. Since Europa-Kolleg is located only in Kassel, the student can be sure of consistent quality.
    • All Europa-Kolleg students are guaranteed to live with a German family rather than in a dormitory with other foreigners. This is very important since it is not always easy to make German friends quickly with limited language ability. Life with a host family also provides close insights into German culture.
    • Europa-Kolleg classes are international. Judging from past experience, Americans will be at most one-forth of the group. This means that there are many opportunities to communicate in German with others who are at a similar level of achievement. Observing the reactions of other non-Germans also provides for a better assessment of one's own ability.
    • Europa-Kolleg's prices are low for the level of services provided. The reason for this is that Europa-Kolleg is a non-profit institution (only certified non-profit institutions may have "e.V. [eingetragener Verein] in their name).
    • Instructional quality is very high and consistent. Europa-Kolleg ist not part of a larger bureaucracy. Its sole purpose is to teach German in Kassel. Since the school is not allowed to make a profit, all money is spent on instruction and extracurricular programs. Most teachers have been with the school for many years.
