The gate on the East end of town is known as the Elster Gate. Here you can see the Black Cloister (Luther's house) and Melanchthon's house in the background. The Elster Gate is rather famous because it is right outside this gate that Dr. Luther made his split from the Roman Catholic Church more or less official. In 1520 Martin Luther held a bonfire in which he burned the Exsurge Domine (the papal bull threatening him with excommunication) as well as many books of Canon Law. |
